Abstract
The Lagrangian relaxation method in optimization is examined to explain team coordination mechanisms in a distributed decision-making process. The dual variables (multipliers) are analyzed to reveal the impacts of potential conflicts, evaluate the benefits of coordination activities, and guide the allocation of coordination effort. Although the discussion is based on a generic team task sequencing problem, the issues addressed are fundamental for systematically investigating human team coordination
