Abstract :
In the United Kingdom the issue of electronic road-use pricing has risen to the forefront of the debate on how to manage the growth in road traffic demand in urban areas and, in the inter-urban context, how to finance the construction of new roads and also pay for the operation and maintenance of the new and existing motorway network. Some of the technology options which are (or may become) available for the charging of road-use are discussed. The current status of the EC-funded ADEPT project which is developing a system concept which will be used for both road-use pricing and road toll-collection is described. The ADEPT project will test the different automatic debiting applications in coordinated field-trials in five locations across Europe.
