Abstract :
In this paper, we study the performance of a combined guard channel and channel reservation with queueing resource management scheme for efficient handling of handoff calls in a macro-/micro-cell hierarchical cellular network. To minimize the forced call termination probability during the handoff process, guard channels are introduced at each microcell, along with channel reservation and queueing of handoff calls at the macrocell. Performance analysis of the combined guard channel and channel reservation with queueing scheme in an hierarchical cellular structure is performed using analytical and simulation techniques. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme reduces forced call termination probability and increases resource utilization with minimal call queueing delay.
