Abstract
This paper uses a detailed dynamic model to simulate the deep water drilling or contact operation from a floating drilling vessel, which uses a passive drill string compensator to mitigate the effects of vessel heave giving rise to a load variation on the drill bit. The simulation shows a degree of contact instability whilst drilling through a hard formation
