Abstract :
The wind loading on overhead conductors is a dominant factor in the strength design of their supporting structures. The authors have developed a low wind pressure conductor which will incur reduced wind impact. A conductor fundamental-performance test and a wind-tunnel test took place to demonstrate its satisfactory performance. In 1998, trial low wind pressure conductors were strung in Miyakojima (an island almost 300 km east of Taiwan) and their field performance observed, especially in the buffets of a typhoon. It has been verified that low wind-pressure conductors will exhibit similar characteristics of horizontal-swing angle up to 30 m/s of average wind speed, irrespective of being in the simulated conditions of a wind tunnel or in the real buffets of a typhoon
