Abstract
Although self study is an important way for engineers to keep current in their fields, there must be a concerted effort by industry, universities, government and professional societies to provide a knowledge base for self-directed learning. For individuals to benefit from any form of continuing education, they must be able to relate learning to broader career management. The current climate does not favor the coordination of continuing education and career development, and for that reason the potential of self-study is not being fully realized.
