A new generation of integrated ocean observing research systems are moving along the path from visionary concept to detailed design with many systems being commissioned now and in the near future. This paper will present an overview of the unprecedented capabilities these observatories can provide emphasizing some of the less obvious but still crucial system elements required to achieve the full potential these systems can deliver
