Abstract :
The design and and test of a high-power soft tube modulator is described. The modulator successfully produced a 250 μs, 30 MW peak output pulse at 70 Hz with an average power of 500 kW. An English electric valve CX1536A thyratron successfully handled average currents in excess of 30 A. The output pulse is regulated to a few per cent, within the accuracy of the current transformer used. The operating parameters of the modulator are discussed, and the system configuration is described
