Abstract
A variety of perturbation theories are discussed for the modal depth-dependent functions and the associated eigenvalues for propagating guided waves in shallow water. The bottom is taken to be homogenous, and the sound speed in the water-column is assumed to decrease monotonically with depth, and to be everywhere less than the sound speed in the bottom. The unperturbed situation is the Pekeris wave-guide, where the sound speed in the water column is constant
