Abstract
Based on the theoretical analysis of microstrip antenna (MSA) loaded with a shorting-pin, a novel MSA with broad beamwidth is proposed. In the structure, multiple layers are used to achieve high radiation efficiency, while a conducting cylinder and a coupling aperture are applied to excite multiple modes to obtain broad beamwidth. Finally, a novel MSA is designed and fabricated as an example. The measured results validate the present design. Compared to traditional MSAs, the present antenna possesses many advantages such as smaller area, broader beamwidth and so on.
