Abstract :
The authors describe a conceptual design based on existing technology for a pulser which delivers 1 MW 100 kA pulses to a 10 W load in either a 1 s burst of ten 1 ms pulses each with a risetime of less than 100 ns, or a 1 s burst of a hundred 100 ns pulses, each with a risetime of less than 15 ns. This particular system utilizes four 2.5 W, 500 kV water PFLs (pulse-forming lines) to form the 100 ns pulses and four 2.5 W, 500 kV type-A PFNs (pulse-forming networks) to produce the 1 ms pulses. The pulses are combined using a 1:4 step up transformer to produce the required output characteristics. The designs for the output switches and the transformers are presented along with the results of computer modeling of the pulsers
