Abstract
A sliding mode controller is developed for optimal transient operation of a continuous bioreactor. The sliding mode is the singular arc from the solution of an optimal control problem. The proposed controller is applied through simulations to an anaerobic digester. Results show excellent tracking of the singular arc and almost optimal performance.
