Abstract
Decentralized observers are introduced for the design of decentralized control systems. The design is performed in two stages. In the first stage, a centralized design is performed, allowing the coordination of control efforts. In the second stage, the decentralized observer gains are obtained by solving a set of nonlinear algebraic equations. The coordinated design procedure can be readily extended to the design of reliable decentralized control systems that accommodate sensor, actuator, processor and other system component failures. The design methods are based on eigenvalue separation results for control systems using decentralized observers
