Abstract
An efficient architecture for the design and implementation of minimum mean absolute error (MMAE) rank-order filters (ROFs) is developed. The proposed architecture uses a realization of ROFs whereby an operation of rank-order filtering is performed by employing a Boolean rank-order operator. As a result, with the proposed architecture, the MMAE design of ROFs is accomplished without carrying out the operation of sorting the samples appearing at the input-window of the filter, which is required in the conventional techniques for the MMAE design of ROFs. An application of the proposed architecture to spatial interpolation is also investigated, by developing a procedure for intrafield deinterlacing of video signals
