Representation information for interoperability now and with the future

The OAIS reference model provides an internationally recognised framework for long-term preservation of information. A fundamental role is played by the information model which defines representation information. We argue that representation information is a key concept both for the preservation of digital information as well as interoperability in the era of globally distributed data.
