Abstract
The performance of magnet power supplies can be enhanced by using a combination of a thyristor rectifier and a PWM converter. The PWM converter, which can be connected in series or in parallel with the rectifier, functions as an active filter to cancel the effect of rectifier harmonics under transient conditions, it can also correct tracking errors. In this paper, the basic operating principles, control schemes, and differences in the series and shunt connected systems are discussed. The component sizes, power ratings, and the complexity of these two topologies are compared
