Abstract
The performance of the switching characteristics using nonlinearity profiles in a symmetric nonlinear directional coupler (NLDC) is given. If the profiles under study satisfy a convergence condition, the method agrees well with numerical results and shows to be a good way to predict the best profile to improve the performance of a planar NLDC
