Generation of an ultra-low phase noise and frequency tunable microwave signal by injection locking of an optoelectronic oscillator using a passively mode-locked fiber laser

Generation of an ultra-low phase noise and frequency tunable microwave signal by injection locking of an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) using a passively mode-locked fiber laser is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The phase noise performance of the OEO is improved by injection locking of the OEO using a passively mode-locked fiber laser. The frequency tuning is achieved by tuning the center frequency of a photonic microwave filter which is implemented by a joint use of a phase modulator and a phase shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG). A microwave signal with a frequency tunable from 6 to 15 GHz and a phase noise of -115 dBc/Hz at an offset frequency of 10 kHz is demonstrated.
