Abstract
Kinetic hydropower system (KHPS) is an energy conversion system that utilizes river, marine or tidal current without the involvement of a dam. Efficiency is a key factor that affects the energy extraction and annual energy production of KPHS. This paper presents a method to evaluate the energy efficiency of various kinetic hydropower systems. The proposed calculation method can contribute to a design of KHPS. The investigation results show the direct-drive PMSG variable-speed system has the highest energy efficiency in the variable flow distributions, while the fixed-speed system with a squirrel cage induction generator can be more efficient with a constant flow distribution.
