Abstract
The authors present the concept of a single-phase to three-phase converter which features a reduced circuit topology. The circuit operates essentially as an AC/DC/AC converter and realizes controlled currents on the input and output sides. The converter can operate as a single-phase to three-phase converter and can drive a three-phase induction motor with high efficiency. The converter has been tested through simulations and through experimental verification using a laboratory prototype. The performance of the overall system was seen to be very good, particularly when driving an induction motor load. Overall system efficiency and input power factor were considerably better than that possible for conventional systems
