Abstract
This paper investigates the problem of the optimal configuration of a tree-structured distributed monitoring system. The main results are a new formulation of the optimal configuration problem that takes care of overlapping in local processing at different levels and an efficient algorithm for configuring the hierarchical monitoring units to optimality in such a tree-structured system
