Abstract
A novel antenna design concept is proposed based on antenna´s nonlinear transient responses. The essential idea is to integrate RF switches into a resonant antenna such as a patch antenna. Driven by modulating signals, the switches are able to shut off and turn on the antenna´s radiation slots directly. It is observed that narrow pulses can be generated and radiated this way. Thus, the patch antenna´s bandpass phenomenon, which limits the antenna´s bandwidth, can be overcomed. The experimental results show that a patch antenna with a resonate frequency 2.4 G and a 30 MHz bandwidth can transmit a digital modulated signal with beyond 400 MHz bandwidth.
