Abstract
Difficulties of measuring pulmonary gas exchange breath by breath and cardiac output beat by beat noninvasively are discussed. Because of the good accessibility, sophisticated methods have been introduced for the automatic online measurement of pulmonary gas exchange even under non-steady-state conditions. Automatic measurement of cardiac output, however, is more difficult and requires steady-state conditions. Two techniques for improvement of the reliability of gas exchange measurements and a setup for cardiac output measurement are discussed.<>
