Abstract :
Summary form only given. This tutorial will review the development of ultrafast high-intensity lasers and the technologies that make them possible. Topics will include a review of ultrashort pulse oscillators, control of high-order dispersion and spectral reshaping, selection of ultrafast compatible optical materials and components, management of thermal distortions and beam quality, and development of new pulse measurement and characterization technologies. A brief review of future systems including those being designed to reach petawatt peak powers with single-Hz repetition rates and terawatt peak powers at kHz repetition rates will also be presented.
