Abstract
Up to now, the propulsion of a conveyor is often realized by a drum, which is driven by a geared motor. Therefore high traction forces have to be transmitted on a small area. As a result, the conveyor is charged with strong mechanical stress. In order to increase the durability of the conveyor, it seems to be benefiting to drive the conveyor directly by a linear motor. Another estimated advantage of this approach is to get a more dynamic drive which could also be very compact. It is also possible to arrange a number of linear drives along the conveyor, in order to achieve the desired feeding forces and to reduce tension forces. The following article presents a designing guide for a linear motor in this application. Thereby the geometrical dimensions and the design of the winding stand in the foreground.
