Abstract
Basic principles of laser/tissue interaction are identified. The basic mechanisms of lasing, laser parameters, and tissue optics and photochemistry are discussed. Nonthermal and thermal effects of lasers on tissue are described. These effects are then examined in the context of surgical applications of lasers
