Abstract
In this paper, conditioning phenomena in compressed SF6, N2 and air have been investigated under positive lightning impulses for point-plane geometry. In SF6 and N2 as the number of shots increases. The breakdown probability decreases and the time lags become longer. After a few hundred shots, a stabilisation occurs. In air, the opposite behaviour has been observed. The experimental procedure (replacement of the conditioned gas by fresh gas, the electrodes remaining unchanged) shows that conditioning phenomena in each gas is due mainly to some changes in the gas state. The results are presented as Von Laue diagrams and interpreted in terms of the critical volume concept
