Abstract
For effective transmission over fading channels, the adaptive transmission becomes promising. In particular, the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) can be used with known channel state information (CSI). In this paper, we consider the stability of an adaptive transmission with AMC and queue. Using the transmission time as a random variable that is characterized by the statistics of fading channel and diversity technique used, we have found that a necessary condition for the stability of the adaptive transmission system is that the diversity order is greater than or equal to three over Rayleigh fading channels.
