Abstract
Ultra wide-band (UWB) wireless communication is one of the most promising technologies for future short-range wireless communications and ranging because it has various inherent advantages, such as high-speed data transmission due to its large capacity and highly accurate ranging and positioning due to an ultra wideband. Thus, UWB wireless communications technology is widely used in various applications such as wireless peripherals for personal computers and wireless connections between PCs and other I/O devices and for consumer electronics, i.e., TV, audio/video, non-communication equipment. Although industrial standardization of wireless personal area networks (WPAN) has been mostly completed, radio regulation for UWB has not been approved yet in Europe and Japan because of a coexistence problem between UWB and existing systems in overlapped bands. On current Japanese and European spectrum masks for UWB signals, there are frequency bands in which a detect-and-avoid (DAA) technique for existing radio systems must be implemented. We propose a soft-spectrum adaptation (SSA)-based DAA mechanism to provide UWB systems that can be used worldwide. The SSA-based DAA was evaluated through computer simulations
