Abstract
This paper aims at investigating the effect of the Voltage Source Converter (VSC) controlled Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) on the transient stability enhancement of a fixed speed wind generator during unsuccessful reclosing of circuit breakers. The control scheme of SMES based on a pulse width modulation based voltage source converter (PWM-VSC) and a two-quadrant DC-DC chopper using Insulated Gate turn off Bipolar Transistor (IGBT). Simulation results of symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults at wind farm terminal bus show that the proposed controlled SMES is able to stabilize the system well in case of an unsuccessful reclosing of circuit breakers.
