Abstract :
This paper presents a new technique to perform partial discharge (PD) monitoring on high voltage apparatus that are critical to transmission systems, focusing on high voltage cable systems. The hardware used for PD monitoring is innovative since it can provide information concerning PD pulse waveforms, allowing, in particular, disturbance and noise rejection. The PD system is also endowed with an identification tool that, at a first level, is able to discriminate between internal, surface and corona PD. This identification tool can be used to improve monitoring effectiveness, since the warning system can be trained, as an example, to weight alarm severity against PD identification, providing more emphasis to internal activities
