Abstract :
Quantitative measurement of distances in holographic images can be accomplished with calipers, at least when the holograms are transparent. A description is given of a holographic rule that enables such measurements to be made in images obtained from reflection holograms with black backings. A transparent-on-black coordinate system with millimeter-divisions is holographed on a Agfa 8E75 HB plate, the plate-coordinate-system distance being 70 mm. The developed and bleached plate gives an orange image upon reconstruction, while the image of the study model is green. The accuracy of distance measurements with this holographic ruler is 1 mm.<>
