Abstract
Power system transient analysis is usually performed using computer simulation tools like the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP). The number of tools suitable for transient analysis is increasing in the last few years. This paper describes a study made in an actual 400 kV AC transmission system considering two alternatives in order to limit switching surge overvoltages during line energization, the pre-insertion resistors or the metal oxide surge arresters. Digital simulations have been made with PSCAD/EMTDC.
