Abstract
The authors describe a model that organizes disease category knowledge as multiple taxonomies and a diagnostic system based on such a model. A disease category can belong to more than one category and has a situational and a relational aspect. In the diagnosis of a disease, all the taxonomies are integrated using the knowledge associated with the categories. These ideas have been implemented for the infectious-diseases domain in a system called INTERX.<>
