This paper refers to the work which has been done in preparation of the VIRTUOUS (Virtual Home UMTS on Satellite) project, previously approved by the European Union in the context of the IST (Information Society and Technology) fifth framework programme. The paper expands on the objectives of the VIRTUOUS project and explains the preliminary architecture of such project
