Abstract
Recently, electronic road pricing and electronic toll collection systems using a microwave identification tag have been placed on trial or planned for their introduction in many countries. In these systems, requiring no vehicles to stop at toll booths, the verification of debiting transactions is the most important point. For this verification, different concepts for vehicle localization are presently under investigation. This paper proposes a new vehicle localization concept for plural vehicles passing in parallel through a communication zone. The system based on this concept is composed of an overhead interrogator and plural receive-only antennas per lane. The interrogator covers a 2.5m×4m communication zone for every passenger car. Each receive-only antenna covers a 1m×3m receiving zone, which no motorcycles pass in parallel. This concept makes it possible to realize a vehicle localization system with a simple composition and without complicated antenna control
