Abstract
Different Kohonen maps have been studied in order to establish whether dimensional and shape aspects are important for map performance. The results presented indicate that for the same number of nodes, two-dimensional maps perform slightly better than three-dimensional maps. On the other hand, there was no difference in performance due to map shape. Different adaptation rules have been studied and compared with respect to map convergence. One of the rules, center adaptation, has been shown to result in faster convergence. Two measures are proposed to establish the unimodality in map response and the internal organization of a trained map
