Abstract :
Trends in the network management product industry are to incrementally enhance traditional centralized management systems with Web-based user interfaces, which mainly resolve the distributed information browsing. Some of the main deficiencies of such systems are their inability to carry out real-time event processing and alarm, and their security. So we believe pure and integrated Web-based network management means more. In this paper, we first investigate two popular Web-based network management models, i.e. two-tier model and three-tier model. And then we present a network management architecture, WebView/98, based on the three-tier model, aiming to realize distributed network management by adopting Web and Java technology, and incorporating traditional standard network management protocols, such as SNMP and CMLP. The WebView/98 approach addresses the outlined key limitations of today´s Web-based network management system by introducing the event-driving coordinator, trusted domain, certificate-based authentication, and the role-based authorization mechanism.
