Abstract :
Compared to block-based motion fields, pel-based (or dense) motion fields have been shown to provide improved quality in many applications. However, this improved performance is achieved at the expense of a significant increase in both computational complexity and motion overhead. In this paper, motion field interpolation (MFI) is proposed as a method of converting a given block motion field to a dense motion field. The proposed method involves a negligible increase in computational complexity and no increase in motion overhead. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated in two applications: motion-compensated prediction and motion-compensated frame-rate conversion.
