Abstract
The ten microcomputers at the Minneapolis Heart Institute are used for word processing, bill processing, research, and database applications. Most of them also communicate with the mainframe. The authors briefly describe the basic components of a personal computer and peripherals. They present guidelines on choosing a personal computer and software and identify the components and factors affecting quality and price. They discuss personal computer administration and maintenance.<>
