  • Abstract
We report on a study of the carbon buildup phenomenon and the charge collection inefficiencies that occur when a carbon target is bombarded with a beam of carbon ions. A Ge(HP) detector is used to measure the γ-rays emitted by the evaporation residues after the fusion reaction of the 12C+12C system. A PIN diode and a Silicon surface barrier detector are also used to measure the backscattering spectra from the Ta target substrate. We analyze the carbon buildup phenomenon at the target as well as charge collection inefficiencies at the detectors for the case of low ion fluences.
