  • Abstract
We have developed a non-contact gaze duration measurement system for the on-board road navigation system. The system can detect the gaze direction and display gaze duration of the driver both in darkness (such as at night) and in brightness (such as under direct sunlight). The resolution of the detection of gaze direction is about 3 degrees, and the accuracy of the gaze duration is about 3 flames (0.1 seconds). In addition, using the measurement system, we measured the gaze duration of the navigation system display in following situations: 1) comparison between the map only display and an additional voice route guidance; and 2) comparison between the fixed direction map display and the heading-oriented direction map display. Results of the measurement are as follows: 1) the voice guidance reduces the gaze duration time by 50-70%; and 2) the “head-up” map display reduces the gaze duration by 5-10%. This system is useful in measuring display gaze duration and the results of the measurement reflected on the development of on-board displays
