Abstract :
We have explored the use of a photon ballast, or trap, layer to simultaneously achieve low optical loss, high optical mode stability, low far field divergence and ellipticity in ridge waveguide laser diodes. A 400 mW 1480 nm pump module is demonstrated. We report results on Fabry-Perot diode lasers as well as on distributed feedback (DFB) diode lasers.
