Abstract
This paper makes an evaluation of the modern production of H2 through water electrolysis and its usage as an energy vector. Aspects of the H2 production by generating plants including a mathematical model with practical and simulated results are presented. This model allows a more accurate prediction of the advanced alkaline electrolyzers behavior used in most electrochemical applications. Two case studies are presented for estimation of the availability, cost of secondary energy, cost of grid energy, costs to establish and operate a H2 generating plant using alkaline water electrolysis and feasibility study based on the economic aspects of the secondary energy from the Itaipu hydroelectric power plant and the non ensured energy from CEMIG electric power utility.
