ISDN operations objectives and their implementation for loop maintenance

A set of goals for integrated services digital network (ISDN) operations support and their rationale are described, and specific implementations of these goals to support basic rate interface (BRI) services and equipment are presented. Most of the goals described are also applicable to primary rate interface (PRI). Goals to guide the development of operations systems (OSs) for ISDN are to support the same automation and cost reduction for ISDN operations as is done for plain old telephone service (POTS) operations, making ISDN POTS-like; provide a high degree of organizational flexibility; capitalize on the embedded base of OSs; support an open architecture and a multivendor competitive environment; introduce new operations capabilities for ISDN customers; move toward more proactive maintenance; obtain network configuration data from the network itself
