Abstract
Synthetic spin valves were thin film stacks of the following typical structure: underlayer/PtMn/CoFe/Ru/CoFe/Cu/CoFe/NiFe/cap. Magnetic metrology aspects of these structure were addressed by the use of an accurate vector VSM (vibrating sample magnetometer) like the ADE Corp. Model X9. The paper focused on accurate determination of the pinning axis, i.e. the angle of unidirectional anisotropy, and the net moment in the synthetic pinned layer.
