Abstract :
Summary form only given. Upconversion fluorescence can serve to reduce the efficiency of a solid-state laser by allowing a fraction of the atoms or ions to bypass the upper state of the laser transition. Thus, it is appropriate to investigate upconversion emission processes in candidate solid-state laser systems. K/sub 2/YF/sub 5/:Er/sup 3+/ is a relatively new optical material that has the usual advantages of a fluoride host for efficient optical transitions.
