Abstract
This work presents a numerical analysis of the impact of PDL and first order PMD effects in DOP and BER of NRZ and RZ signals in DPSK and DQPSK modulations for high speed optical communication networks (40 and 100 Gb/s). It was noticed that both DOP and BER of RZ DPSK signals had a lower tolerance to the effects of PMD and PDL in comparison with RZ DQPSK signals. Moreover, the impact of PMD and PDL in the BER of RZ DPSK signals was better for an average DGD smaller than the time slot.
