Abstract :
A high switch peak voltage is a disadvantage of the class E amplifier in some applications. A lossless voltage clamp method with a transformer and a diode has been proposed as a remedy for the high peak switch voltage. However, this circuit suffers from a large ringing due to the transformer leakage inductance, which is superimposed on the clamped voltage and partially eliminates the effect of the voltage clamping. In this paper, a switch voltage clamping using a transmission-line transformer is proposed to reduce the ringing. The proposed concept was verified with an experimental voltage-clamped class E amplifier at 4 MHz and 2.9 W.
