Abstract
Summary form only given. We demonstrate a dynamic gain-controlled Er-doped fibre amplifier (EDFA) that controls pump power with a response time of 650 ns. In the eight-channel 10-Gbit/s WDM network composed of two dynamic gain controlled EDFAs and 80 km dispersion shifted fiber (DSF), one surviving channel is successfully transmitted without power penalty even when seven out of eight channels are added/dropped at 1 kHz.
